Zoo de Castellar is a very unique place where you can feed and interact with the animals. It is not a zoo per se but a rescue centre which was set up in 1998 as a private initiative to provide a safe haven for exotic and unusual pets which were sold on the black market and seized by the authorities. After a few years they decided to open their doors to the public to gain financial support and also show how these animals are cared for. Bit by bit the centre is being reformed and today it is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours interacting with animals.
There are various animals from monkeys to tigers to birds of prey. You can touch and hold several including the snakes, lemurs and lamas and you can feed fruit bats and and there’s a petting area for the goats, ducks, tortoise, rabbits and guinea pigs. Meanwhile there are other more exotic animals to see such as tigers, including a young white Bengal tiger, baboons, lion cubs, ostrich…some of young animals are brought out for closer inspection depending on what they have at that time etc.
There is a cafe, easy free parking and picnic area. Cost is €15 per adult and €9 for ages 2-13 years and you can buy a €1 bag of food for the animals when you enter if you wish. The zoo is open daily from 10am until dusk. There is also an annual pass available, you can also host birthday parties there and they run a summer camp – see their website for more info.
